INTERNATIONAL C CLASS K37

K37 was designed by CONTINUUM ID's Roland Whitehead for the British challenge for the International Catamaran Challenge Trophy, better known as the "Little America's Cup", in 1987. Built by Carl Douglas Racing Shells, the world's leading maker of wooden skulling boats and pairs, in compsote wood with a radical Kevlar® and foam sandwich sail.

The sail, designed with the Computational Fluid Dynamics assistance of Professor Steven Fiddes of the UK's Bristol University, incorporated double split flap producing and upwind sailing efficiency yet to be surpassed by any sailboat.

Having failed to beat the Australian Telecom's "Yellow Pages" defender she returned to the UK and took part in several demonstration sails before being destroyed in storage by the 1989 gales.

A further British Challenge for the Little America's Cup is always on the cards. Roland Whitehead remains secretary of the UK International C Class Association and would be willing to enter into discussions with any interested party.
